The dMAT is a new aptitude exam required for some Indian students applying for a master’s degree in Germany. Students must add it to their APS documents from the Summer Semester 2027 intake. Additionally, it only applies if your bachelor's degree is in engineering, business, management, accounting, economics, or finance.

What Is the dMAT?

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a standardised aptitude test for master’s applicants from India to Germany. The test measures your analytical and problem solving skills as well as how you can apply these to academic problems.

It will be a key part of the APS application process for Indian students starting from the Summer Semester 2027 intake. However, APS India does not conduct the dMAT test and two organisations are involved:

APS India vs. g.a.s.t. — Who Handles What?

The Academic Evaluation Center India (APS India):

  • Verifies your academic documents are genuine
  • Uses the dMAT result in the APS documentation
  • Issues your APS certificate for your university and visa application

g.a.s.t (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung), on the other hand:

  • Administers the dMAT itself
  • Takes care of the test centers, registration, and payment
  • Issues the dMAT certificate

In short: g.a.s.t. runs the dMAT test and APS India uses the certificate as one of the documents making up your APS certificate.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?

You only need to take the dMAT if all of the following apply to you:

  1. You're applying for a master's programme for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later
  2. Your previous degree falls into one of three affected field groups
  3. You don’t qualify for any of the exemptions provided

Please note: The exact wording on your degree certificate matters. A title containing "Management" or "Technology" doesn't automatically place you in an affected group. APS India classifies based on the official degree title, branch, or major on your documents. If your degree is interdisciplinary or doesn't clearly match one category, don't guess — check the official affected fields list.

Who Is Exempt From the dMAT?

The dMAT applies to a much smaller group than the headlines suggest, and there's a good chance you're exempt. Before completing any registration, double-check this in this section.

Applicants Who Don’t Need dMAT

You're exempt the dMAT if you fall into any of these groups:

  • Bachelor’s programme applicants
  • PhD applicants
  • Applicants whose bachelor's degree is outside the three affected field groups
  • Applicants taking part in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme

Important: If you will be participating in an exchange or university partnership programme, you need to submit a confirmation letter from your home university, the German partner university, or programme coordinator alongside your APS documents.

What Happens When Your APS Process Has Already Started?

If your APS process had already started before the dMAT rule was announced, chances are that you’re exempt. If any of these apply to you, you won’t need to take the dMAT exam:

  • You sent your complete APS documents before June 29, 2026
  • You completed your APS online registration before June 29, 2026
  • You've already received your APS certificate

Additionally, if you are applying for the Winter Semester 2026/27, you will not need a dMAT certificate. The requirement only applies for Summer Semester 2027 onward.

Fields That Don’t Need the dMAT

Since several commonly studied degrees don’t automatically fall under the dMAT requirement, this can lead to confusion. Your degree is only included if APS India lists it under these fields: engineering, business/management, or commerce/accounting/finance/economics.

According to the field list, these are some examples of fields don’t automatically need the dMAT:

Life Sciences & Biotechnology

  • Microbiology
  • Life Sciences
  • B.Sc. Medical Biotechnology
  • B.Sc. Biotechnology
  • Food Technology without Engineering designation

Computer Science & IT

  • B.Sc. Information Technology
  • B.Sc. Computer Science or Computer Science without Engineering designation
  • Bachelor of Computer Applications
  • Cyber Security, Data Science, or AI as standalone fields

Health & Pharmacy

  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Pharma Technology
  • Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy and other health-science degrees

Other Excluded Fields

  • Arts, Social Sciences, and Pure Sciences, expect Economics
  • Humanities
  • Architecture, Interior Design, and Planning
  • Law and Education

The Computer Science exception: If your degree is titled Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and awarded as an engineering qualification, it is covered under the Engineering group. This means you will need to do the dMAT exam. A standalone B.Sc. Computer Science or BCA is not automatically covered. The official wording on the certificate is what decides this.

Important dMAT Dates: When to Register, Test, and Get Your Certificate

According to g.a.s.t., the current schedule for the first dMAT in India is as follows:

Milestone

Date

Registration opens

29 June 2026

Registration deadline

15 September 2026

dMAT test date

26 September 2026

Certificate is issued online

12 October 2026

Please note: This schedule applies for Summer Semester 2027 intake. Seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis. This means you should register as early as possible.

The dMAT will be conducted at selected g.a.s.t. centers across India. These include but are not limited to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. You will find the full list of centers when completing your registration.

How Much Does the dMAT Cost?

The dMAT fee is €150 and is paid directly to g.a.s.t. during registration. This fee is separate from the APS costs (€225). Here is how to budget if the dMAT applies to you:

Fee

Amount (EUR)

What Does the dMAT Actually Test? Format & Scoring

The dMAT runs about 3.5 hours total, includes a break, is in English, and every question is single-choice. The test consists of two parts:

  • Core Module: This consists of three subtests that measure general analytical and cognitive skills.
  • Subject Module: This is a general academic module that tests your ability to apply your analytical and cognitive skills to academic problems. It measures how well you apply reasoning rather than memorise facts.

How Your Score Is Reported

Your dMAT certificate will show the result on two scales:

  • The dMAT score: The total number of right answers is converted to a number between 0 and 200 with the average being 100.
  • The percentile rank: Indicates how you performed compared to other test participants. For example, a percentile rank of 70 means you scored the same or better than 70% of all participants.

There is no official pass mark. German universities decide independently how much weight to give your dMAT result, and some may set their own cut-offs for specific programmes. Your dMAT certificate doesn't expire once issued.

How the dMAT Fits Into Your Overall Application

If you need to take the dMAT test, how you plan your application process is key. Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Confirm your anabin status: The anabin database confirms whether your university and degree are recognised at all in Germany.
  2. Check if you need to take the dMAT: Confirm that you plan to start your studies in Germany in the Summer Semester 2027 or later and that your previous degree requires dMAT.
  3. Register and sit the dMAT: Register through the g.a.s.t. Portal, pay the required fees and go to your chosen center for the test.
  4. Submit your APS documents: After receiving your dMAT certificate, include this in your APS application documents and submit them.
  5. APS certificate is issued: APS India will verify your documents and issue your APS certificate, also referencing your dMAT result. You can now apply to German universities and for your student visa.

One useful flexibility: if you completed your APS online registration on or after 29th June 2026, you can submit your other APS documents first and add the dMAT certificate when it's ready. Keep in mind that APS India can only issue your final APS certificate once your dMAT certificate has arrived and been checked.

dMAT vs. TestAS: What's the Difference?

dMAT and TestAS can be confused because both are standardised German academic aptitude tests, but they serve different purposes:

  • TestAS is a long-standing, separate test used by many German universities to assess general and subject-specific aptitude. It is not tied to the APS process.
  • dMAT is brand new, tied specifically to the APS documentation requirement for a defined group of Indian master's applicants, and does not replace TestAS, anabin, or any university's own admission criteria.

What the dMAT Does Not Do

If you take one thing away from this article, make it this: the dMAT is a data point, not a verdict. It carries far less weight than most students fear, and no single result can derail your application on its own.

  • A low dMAT score does not, by itself, cause your APS certificate to be rejected
  • The dMAT does not replace anabin or formal degree recognition
  • It does not replace document verification by APS India
  • It does not decide general university admission. Each university weighs it independently.

It helps to see the dMAT as less of an impediment and more of a chance to prove your readiness for Germany. Prepare for it, give it your best and remember that it is one document among many that make up your full application.

How to Register for the dMAT

While the dMAT result will be part of your APS certificate, registration, payment, and issuing of certificates is managed by g.a.s.t. (not APS India). This is how registration works:

  1. Go to the g.a.s.t. registration portal.
  2. Enter your name exactly as it is printed on your passport.
  3. Select an available test center. Slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  4. Pay the €150 fee online and save your confirmation.
  5. Sit the test on the scheduled date (September 26, 2026 for the first cycle).
  6. Download your certificate from the g.a.s.t. portal once available (October 12, 2026 for the first cycle).

Important: Missing the registration deadline can delay your university admission by a semester. If Summer Semester 2027 is your target, register as early in the window as you can and book a test center near you before slots fill.
